HOUSING AND ENCLOSURES

Proper housing is one of the most important parts of hamster care. This guide covers cage sizes, safe materials, and bedding depth.

Minimum Cage Sizes

Hamsters are active creatures that need ample uninterrupted floor space to run, explore, burrow, and exhibit natural behaviors. Small or cramped cages can lead to stress, boredom, health problems (e.g. spinal issues, overgrown teeth, excessive bar chewing), and reduced lifespan. Bigger cages provide room for enrichment items, hiding spaces, and allow the hamster to move without constantly bumping into walls.

Syrians: ~??? sq inches. Female Syrians may do better in sizes 775 sq inches and above.
Dwarves: ~??? sq inches.

If you’re shopping or building, here are types of enclosures people commonly use that meet or exceed minimums:

  • Large glass tanks / “breeder tanks”
  • Reptile terrariums (with secure lid)
  • Large bin cages / DIY bin setups
  • Cages marketed for hamsters that are large enough (often difficult to find)
  • Custom or IKEA hacks (e.g. large bins, Ikea parts) Hamster Care Guide+1

Also, make sure the cage is uninterrupted floor space (i.e. not connecting multiple small cages by tunnels etc., unless they are permanently and securely joined) because joins/seams often reduce usable space.

Bedding and Substrate

Bedding

Good bedding is critical not only for comfort but for burrowing, nesting, and controlling odor.

Aspen is a great bedding for controlling odor. It is best mixed with paper bedding to allow for better burrowing.
